Jose Manuel Ramos-Horta (born the December 26th 1949 with Dili with the Eastern Timor), is a Politician Timorese. Prime Minister of the July 10th 2006 with the May 19th 2007, it became president of the Republic the May 20th.
It obtains in 1993 the Prix Rafto for its efforts for peace with the Eastern Timor. It will receive then the Nobel Prize of peace with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo for their work at the time of the search for a peaceful and equitable resolution of the conflict in Eastern Timor.
The June 25th 2006, the party in power refused to dismiss the Prime Minister Marí Alkatiri, in spite of the urgent calls of the president Xanana Gusmão and the pressure of thousands of demonstrators. This attitude caused its immediate resignation, in sign of protest just like those of the Minister for Transport, of the Communication and of Public works Ovideo Amaral and the vice-minister of Health Shine Maria back Reis Lobato.

Being presented in the form of an independent candidate to the presidential election of spring 2007 (with the support of outgoing president Xanana Gusmão), it obtains, at the time of the first turn, the April 9th: 88102 votes, are 21,81 % of the votes cast, in second position behind Francisco Guterres known as Milk , supported by the Fretilin, which obtains: 112666 votes, are 27,89 % of the votes cast.
At the time of the second organized turn, the May 9th, to decide between the two candidates made at the head (according to the terms of the constitution), it largely precedes however its adversary, while obtaining: 285835 votes, are 69,18 % of the votes cast, against: 127342 votes (30,82 %) for Francisco Gutterres.
It is replaced in its functions of Prime Minister, on May 19th, the day before its nomination, by Estanislau da Silva, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Agriculture, which will occupy by interim the functions of Prime Minister until the nomination of a new government, after the legislative elections which must intervene in the month of June 2007.
