Jose Giovanni
Jose Giovanni , pseudonym of Joseph Damiani , was a writer and a scenario writer free - Suisse of Corsican origin, born with Paris (France) the June 22nd 1923 and died in Lausanne (Swiss) the April 24th 2004 of a brain hemorrhage.
Old begun again justice, it often drew its inspiration in its personal experiences or real characters (Pierrot the insane one in the novel Histoire of insane ) to compose its police intrigues. In its films as well as in its novels, it is made sometimes the cantor of the Pègre, following the example Auguste Breton the, all into exciting the virile friendships and preaching the confrontation of the individual with nature.
Biography
Of Corsica origin , Jose Giovanni made solids studies (college Stanislas, Lycée Janson-with-Sailly) and exerted many trades (logger, minor, landlord…) before becoming writer then scenario writer. Impassioned by the climbing, it was also guide of high Montagne, and belonged to the group Jeunesse and Montagne (created by a general of the air force which returned from London) at the time of the Second world war.
The prison during eleven years
In 1945, with the Release, it attends the “medium” of Pigalle and soaks in a business of racket organized by his/her maternal uncle, with the assistance of his/her older brother. The business turns very badly since three of the rackettées people are killed.Condemned to dead (whereas itself did not kill anybody) in 1948 with an accomplice, Georges Accad, Jose Giovanni escapes from little from the Guillotine; pardoned by the president Vincent Auriol like Accad, its sorrow is commuted to twenty years of forced labors.
It leaves prison in 1956 and is rehabilitated in 1986 after a new lawsuit.
The writing
At thirty-three years, he writes its first novel, the Hole , which tells the escape bid that he made in prison with other prisoners. Its lawyer, Stephen Hecquet, and Roger Nimier make read the book with Antoine Blondin and Albert Camus thanks to which it will be published. Its style, at the same time strange and voluntarily awkward, does not fail to astonish by its strong lucky finds and its images, sometimes with the limit of the tolerable one.In 1958, Marcel Duhamel the fact of entering to the Black series , where it points out from the start by the publication of three novels left the same year:
- Class all risks (film of Claude Sautet).
- Excommunicated the whose Jean Becker made a first film One named Rocca and Jose Giovanni a remake Scoumoune with Jean Paul Belmondo and Claudia Cardinale.
- the Second Breath (film of Jean Pierre Melville in 1966. New adaptation by Alain Corneau in 2007).
The cinema
Its black novels with success lead it towards the Cinéma and, in 1959, Jacques Becker propose to him to be adviser technical and scenario writer for the adaptation of his novel the Hole . It is the beginning of a very rich cinematographic career during which in turn it will be author, Acteur, Réalisateur, Scénariste and which leads it to leave a little on side its literary work.In 1995, it returns to the writing and devotes to the memory of his/her father a work, It had in the heart of the untraceable gardens , which it will then adapt to the cinema with Bruno Cremer.
Jose Giovanni wrote twenty novels, two books of memories whose My Large Mouths , thirty-three scenarios and carried out fifteen films and five telefilms.
At the end of its life, it devoted part of its time to visit in prison of young delinquents and to encourage them to reintegrate itself.
