Jose De Ribas
Jose de Ribas , also known in Russia under the name of Osip (Iosif) Mikhailovich Deribas (Осип (Иосиф) МихайловичДерибас), born with Naples the June 6th 1749 and died in Saint-Petersbourg the December 14th 1800, is a Russian admiral of Catalan origin.
He entered to the service of Russia in 1772 and took part in the Russo-Turkish wars of 1768-1774 and 1787-1792. As son-in-law of Ivan Betskoy and a secretary of the Prince Potemkine, it became one of the first administrators of News-Russia. It was implied in the plot to assassinate the emperor Paul, but died several months before the assassination. The principal one, and most famous, street of Odessa, the Deribasovskaya, was named in its honor.
