Jose Corti

Jose Corti is the name of a French editor (J. Corticchiato, 1895 - 1984) and Publisher which it founded.

History

As of 1925, it publishes his/her friends Éluard, Breton, Aragon with the Surrealist Éditions. Then it creates the Publisher which bears its name still today and publishes El Salvador Dalí ( the Metamorphosis of Narcisse ) in 1937 and Julien Gracq in 1938 ( With the castle of Argol , first novel of this author, with its financial participation). This last will not have an other editor (except Gallimard with the edition as of its complete works in two volumes in the Pleiad).

Since the death of its founder in 1984, Jose Corti continued to function under the direction of Bertrand Fillaudeau (with Fabienne Raphoz in joint management since 1997). Several collections were then created, in particular While reading, by writing (name of the Essai of Julien Gracq, 1980), which gathers tests of writers in connection with their experiment and the fact of even writing.

A committed house

Jose Corti is a Publisher which will engage, under the Occupation, in the publication of clandestine texts (following the example Éditions of Midnight, for example). It will publish many poetic texts after the war, as well as university work among most innovative and of the republications of even forgotten authors little known (Radcliffe).

The most known author of Jose Corti, Julien Gracq ( the Shore of Syrtes , Price Goncourt 1951, refused by the author), reflects rather well the spirit which reigned a long time on this Publisher: efforts for literary research more than for the large Profit S (pulling S initial seldom very important) and engagement in more or less risky ways.

The currency of the editions Jose Corti is: “Nothing commun run” . It returns at the time of the birth of the house where pullings were confidential and with the Engagement of the house. It has a second significance: Jose Corti would have liked, under the Occupation, to show in an implicit way that its publisher had nothing commun run with the occupying German .
