Jose Calvo Sotelo
Jose Calvo Sotelo (Tuy, Pontevedra, May 6th 1893 - Madrid, July 13rd 1936)) was a Spanish Politician Monarchiste of foreground before the Guerre of Spain. Its assassination by republican militants will rejoin many Spanish with the putsch of the generals Emilio Mola and Francisco Franco in 1936.
Economist and Lawyer, professor of university, Jose Calvo Sotelo began his political career with the Conservative party of Antonio Maura and with the ministry for justice.
In 1919, he is member of the the Spanish Cortes.
In 1922, it is named civil governor of Valence.
In 1923, Calvo is charged, after the catch to be able of Miguel Primo de Rivera, with the development of a regional and municipal constitution.
In 1925, Calvo Sotelo becomes Minister for Finance.
In 1931, it is thorough with the exile with the advent of the République.
In May 1934, amnestied, it returns in Spain and is elected appointed Renovación Española .
It quickly becomes a political and charismatic figure of foreground and the leader of the nationalist right.
In 1935, it tries without success to take the control of the Spanish Phalange directed by Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera.
After the victory of the Frente Popular in February 1936, it is a sour and pointed critic republican government.
Its criticisms aggravate with more at the point the leaders of the Popular front. He then directly is threatened by Dolores Ibárruri called Pasionaria.
The July 12th 1936, Jose Calvo Sotelo denounces the Marxist drifts vigorously government at the Parliament. The following day, in reprisal, of the members of the Republican guard and the militants of socialist youths take by storm the residence of Calvo Sotelo and take along it with them to kill it inside a light van of police force.
Its body then is brought and left with the cemetery by the members of the republican police force itself.
All catholic Spain and that of right-hand side are then shocked. Its burial is followed by tens of thousands of people whereas the silence of the republican government, embarrassed, is deafening. This event will precipitate the preparations of the military coup d'etat of the July 17th 1936 which will lead to the war of Spain.
