Jose Fernando Bonaparte is a Argentinian Paléontologue born on June 14th, 1928. He discovered a great number of South American Dinosaures and was used as mentor with a new generation of paleontologists like Rodolfo Coria. According to the paleontologist Peter Dodson of the University of Pennsylvania, “almost with him only, it succeeds in making of Argentina the 6th country of the world in term of dinosaurs”.
Biography
Bonaparte is the son of an Italian sailor. It was born with Rosario (Argentine) and grew with Mercedes (Buenos Aires). In spite of a lack of training in the field, it started to collect Fossiles as of its more young age, and created even a museum in its city. Later, it became Curateur of the National university of Tucumán where it was named Doctor Honoris Causa in 1974. At the end of the years 1970, he became scientist of the most rank ( senior scientist ) to the National museum of natural science of Buenos Aires.
The discoverer
Natural diversity of South America
Supercontinent of the Pangée separated in Laurasia in north and Gondwana in the south during the Jurassic . During the Cretaceous, the South America moved away from the remainder of Gondwana. This division caused a difference in evolution between the biotopes of north and the south, and the animals of the south passed for very strange to those which were accustomed to fauna more in north. Bonaparte discovered facts corroborating this division, with the result that the paleontologist Robert Bakker called it “Main Mesozoic ”.
In South America, the titanosaures developed armours and were flourishing, while the Sauropode S of the northern continent disappeared and were replaced by vast herds of hardrosaures ; the Théropode S carnivores were represented by abelisaures and strange dinosaurs like the horned Carnotaurus , with short members and a crushed nose. Indications make it possible to think that a passage united North America and of the South at the end of the Crétacé ; indeed titanosaures were discovered in north until in Utah and of the Ornithorynque S in the south until in Patagonie.

Its philosophy
Bonaparte is a traditionalist and does not use the modern method Cladistique, which Partly applies the principle of Parcimonie to a vast field of Synapomorphie S. for this reason, it declined which was quoted to him to work on a new treaty: The Dinosauria . Although much more known for its discoveries on the dinosaurs, it prefers the study of the Mammifère S. It is known as steady worker, been obstinated, with a strong personality
