José Eduardo dos Santos

José Eduardo dos Santos (Luanda, August 28th 1942) is the president in exercise of the République of Angola since the September 10th 1979.

Biography

He is Minister for the Foreign relations of the November 11th 1975 with the December 9th 1978 and Prime Minister associated and Minister for the Plan of the December 9th 1978 with the September 10th 1979.

Dos Santos succeeds the father of Angolan independence Agostinho Neto in 1979 and becomes general secretary of the Movimento Popular de Libertação of Angola (MPLA) the September 10th 1979. At the time of the free elections and multi-party of 1992, back Santos leads its camp to the victory vis-a-vis the UNITA and its chief Jonas Savimbi.

Dos Santos is frequently associated with the corruption and diversion of the funds of oil in Angola, and its family has an important inheritance, of which houses in the principal European capitals and of the bank accounts in Switzerland and in other tax shelters offshore oil rig.

In 2001, it announces to want to pass the hand if it succeeds in bringing back peace to Angola. However, after the death of Savimbi and the disarmament of UNITA, back Santos is re-elected with the head of the MPLA and of aucuns calculate that back Santos will be candidate for his succession in 2006. He announced in December 2006 that the next presidential election would take place in 2009.
