- the Byzantine general Narsès lance an attack of scale in Italy and it requires their support of the maritime Vénètes of the lagoon. In October, it demolishes Teias, the successor of Totila as king of the Ostrogoths, with the Bataille of the mount Lactarius, close to the Vesuvius.
- the Byzantine reconquest of the Italy is practically complete.
- the Ostrogoths then call for the aid the Francs and the Alamans which plunder the country but will be decimated by the diseases and will be crushed with Capoue in 554 by the Byzantine .

Justinien convenes the fifth council ecumenical of Constantinople II: judgment of the Nestorianisme and the “Three Chapters”. Judgment of certain points of the doctrines of Origène. The pope Vigil, although retained in the city, refuses to go there as well as the large majority of the bishops of Occident. Vigil is exiled by the emperor in an island of the Marmara Sea. It yields finally and is authorized to turn over to Rome but dies in the course of road with Syracuse in 555.
