Joran

The joran is a Vent fresh the North-West which blows on the south of the Massif of the Jura, of the Lac Léman, the Neuchâtel Lake and the Lac of Bienne.

It is an unforeseeable wind which can fall down with ardor on the lake. It is characterized at the beginning by strong gusts before regularizing itself. One especially meets it in the stormy situations or at the time of the passage of precipitations. When it blows, the temperature drops quickly.

Distinguishing marks: large black Cumuli on the Jura, it draws its name there and takes its source there. It is a wind prevailing, unforeseeable and violent one, it blows after the passage of a disturbance, very changing into direction, it is established the North-West with 3-6 bf and dies on the French coasts of the lake Léman. If the joran is established in north, it indicates the probable arrival of the good weather.

Other significances

The Parish of Joran , gathering the villages of Boudry, Bevaix, Cortaillod and Béroche on banks of the Neuchâtel Lake, chose this name because it is very exposed with this wind. Joran is also a first name little running, probably of medieval origin.
