Jor-El

Jor-EL is a character of Comic S pertaining to the universe of cd. Comics. Jor-El is the biological father of Superman, and the husband of Lara. He was a scientist strongly respected on the planet Krypton before his destruction, a destiny which he had provided, but of which he had not been able to convince his colleagues in time.

Jor-El however succeeds in saving his/her Kal-El son, by sending it in a rocket of its manufacture on the planet the Earth right before the Krypton destruction. After the construction of the Fortress of Loneliness, Superman honoured his/her biological parents died by a statue representing Jor-EL and of Lara supporting Krypton.

Biography

Versions before Crisis

Krypton-II

In the universe where Krypton-II was, the father of Superman was called Jor-L and it was a scientific genius with a fertile and wide intellect. He had undertaken experiments of great scale and discovered the Phantom Zone. Jor-L had provided that Krypton would explode because of the atomic pressures exerted on the core of planet. It is resulting from an big family of scientists having created many inventions. It had two brothers Nim-L, his twin and Zor-L, both of large scientists.

In addition to sciences, Jor-L had also studied the problems involved in the war, transport, criminal justice. He worked to develop a serum to prolong the life and carried out a precise telescopic study of the Earth. Finally it had undertaken an archaeological research in the vestiges of a civilization died to the bottom of the large Krypton sea. It even obtained a price for its inventions.

Because of its moral opposition to the capital punishment, it conceived a system by which the largest criminals were exiled in space in capsules where time was suspended. This practice was abandoned when Jor-L discovered the Phantom Zone, a twilight dimension in which the criminals could be banished.

This scientific brilliance obtained a seat at the prestigious scientific advice of Krypton and Lora, his wife, gave rise to Kal-L with Kryptonopolis, the capital. Little time afterwards, Jor-L made the most important discovery of all its scientific career: he discovered that the Krypton uranium core aged and was going to involve a chain reaction generating a planetary cataclysm. Although evidence lack, Jor-L explained the catastrophe to come to the council from Krypton, but this one did not believe it in spite of the first grondements which were made hear. He projected to make evacuate all Kryptoniens on Earth but there was no time to him and nobody wanted to believe it. Its last project was thus to save his/her son. At haste, the infant was placed in a spaceship, was wrapped in yellow, blue and red covers and was sent on Earth. Jor-L and Lara died in the Krypton explosion.

Krypton-I

In the parallel universe where Krypton-I was, the history was almost the same one, except that it proceeded in the neighborhoods of 1940 and the original one in the neighborhoods of 1920. In this reality, the name of the father of Superman is Jor-El, that of his Lara wife, those of her brothers Nim-El and Zor-El, and that of his/her Kal-El son.

Current version

In the new version revised later by John Byrne in the mini-series refondatrice Superman: Man off Steel , Kal-El was not born yet when it is sent in space, but still in gestation in a matrix. Krypton is there a world in which the sexual relationships do not exist any more. Whereas it sends his/her son in Jor-El space acknowledges to have redécouvert the love by seeing Lara.

Other media

In the animated series

In the animated series of the years 1990, Jor-El, a scientist, discovers that its planet will be struck by a meteorite and that it will be destroyed. It decides to inform of them the members of the council who turn to their unit of information: Brainiac. But this one their advertisement that Jor-El is mistaken. This last, not including/understanding the reaction of lost Brainiac and being known, decides with his wife to send their Kal-El son on Earth.

Cinema

Jor-El, interpreted by Marlon Brando (which plays this part in Superman, first of all seems a prosecutor pleading against the Général Zod at an high council, then is opposed savagely to the council by informing them of the danger of the Krypton explosion. The council threatens it to undergo the same fate as Zod if it is not keep silent. Jor-El promises to them whereas neither him nor his wife will leave planet.

Televised series

In Smallville one hears only his voice, the scenario writers not being able, at the beginning, for contractual reasons, to show of Kryptoniens. Its role is rather mysterious. He guides his son towards his destiny but its reactions are sometimes incomprehensible and hateful for the human ones. The voice of Jor-El in the series is that of Terence Stamp which played the part of Zod in Superman: the film and Superman II.
