Joost
Joost (code name The Venice Project ) is a project of Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of KaZaA and Skype), of which the goal is to create a software allowing the distribution of programs television and other forms of vidéos on the Web by using the technology of the Peer to peer.
The current version of the software is based on XULRunner and audio management re-uses ZAP Kit media. The layer peer to peer comes from the company Joltid, which also provided the layer peer to peer of Skype.
Working under the name of code “The Venice Project”, Zennstrom and Friis set up of the teams of developers in a half-dozen of cities around the world, inter alia New York, London, Leyde and Toulouse. These teams are in this moment in negotiations with the principal television channels.
History
- October 2006: Announces of Venice Project.
- December 2006: Beginning of the tests in silly phase on invitation only.
- January 2007: The project becomes “Joost”.
- May 2007: Commercial starting of Joost.
- October 1st, 2007: Launching public of Beta 1.0 (More need for invitation to use it).
