Joola
The Joola is the ferry which ensured the shuttle between the capital sénégalaise and the natural area of Casamance. It sank the September 26th 2002 by causing the death of 1863 people whereas it was conceived to transport 550 of them, thus constituting the greatest tragedy of the history of the Senegal. Joola carried out the connection Dakar - Karabane - Ziguinchor: it connected the Casamance, isolated province, with the remainder of the Senegal and avoided forwarding by the Gambia. It carried out two connections per week starting from the capital, Tuesday and Friday in the neighborhoods of 20:00, and two others starting from Ziguinchor Thursday and Sunday towards 13:00 the voyage lasted 13 hours. This connection made it possible to leave the Casamance insulation.
This accident, whose gravity is without precedent, is mainly due to the speakers. The Senegalese State was obliged to take disciplinary measures against the faulty ones. Many heads fell on the level from the National marine, the Port authority of Dakar and even from the Army sénégalaise. However, the exact number of victims remained Tabou.
Two years after this drama, some efforts were note: the Senegaleses seized again themselves and a new discipline settled since. Because of importance of the traffic between Dakar and Ziguinchor, the lack of infrastructure which can ensure of rapids exchanges between this regional capital constituted an obstacle with the good walk of the economy sénégalaise. After three years of absence, the sea link Dakar-Ziguinchor thus took again the November 11th 2005 with a new boat, the Wilis .
In order to avoid a new drama, the Wilis does not ensure the stage of Karabane, because there does not exist pontoon of loading.
