Jonquière

The district of Jonquière forms part since 2002 of the town of Saguenay, located in the administrative area of the Saguenay-Lake-Saint-Jean. Its population rises, in 2001, with 54.842 inhabitants.

Industries of wood, paper and aluminum constitute the essence of the industrial activity of the place.

History

The site of the city is occupied as of 1847 by Marguerite Belley and her children. In 1850, the canton of Jonquière, named according to Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel of Jonquière, governor of the News-France of 1749 with 1752, is proclaimed.

Saint-Dominique-of-Jonquière point of disjunction its first priest and opens his registers in 1866. The canonical erection of these people follows in 1870, and the construction of the church is finished in 1876.

The municipality of parish of Saint-Dominique-of-Jonquière is made up in 1883, whereas the municipality of village of Saint-Dominique-of-Jonquière is made up in 1904. It is this village which, in 1912, becomes the Ville of Jonquière .

Jonquière develops quickly in particular thanks to the creation of pulp mills at the beginning of the 20th century. In the middle of the Twenties, the company Alcan establishes its first factories in the area, with Arvida (which is then distinct from Jonquière). In 1975, the city is amalgamated with Arvida and Kénogami and carries, until 2002, the name of Jonquière.

Jonquière is the host of the Jeux of Quebec at the winter 1976.

The downtown area of Jonquière is skirted by the River-with-Sands, whose overflow because much of damage to the infrastructures of the city at the time of sadly celebrates flood of the summer 1996.
