Jonage

Jonage is a common French, located in the department of the the Rhone and the area the Rhone-Alps.

The inhabitants of Jonage are called Jonageois.

Geography

History

In Ier century before our era, the site was occupied by a tribe, the " Pégasiares, which formed the pagus of Meyzieu. With the Roman conquest, the ground of Jonage was included in the province Viennese then, after the bursting of the empire and the advent of feudality, it belonged to the Dauphine one. With the the Middle Ages, Jonage depended on Midsummer's Day of Lyon, as one announces it pouillé (state of the benefit of the Church) the 11th century announcing the church of " Joanages" among that of the Archpriest of Meyzieu. Undoubtedly this is there the origin of its name, Jonage being a deformation of Jean (Jehan - Johan). medieval Château remains today only some vestiges, most remarkable being an impressive section of wall drawing up with the vertical a such Monolithe with the sepulchral silhouette.

On the other hand, there remain nothing the old residence of the Count S Yon de Jonage, built on the other pouring of the hill in 1678. Destroyed first once, the masonry was rebuilt while taking as a starting point the Napoleonean style. During the First World War, it accommodated a military Hôpital, before being left with the abandonment for finally being demolished in 1925.

From second half of the 19th century, the population decrease gradually. The industrial rise of Lyon attracts the peasants, who forsake their ground with the profit of the factory work. However, titanic work of boring of the channel of Jonage, between 1892 and 1899, mobilized hundreds of workmen, of which many inhabitants of the commune. This one found a renewal of activity there: one counted for example nearly 22 bar-restaurants which were used as canteens to the workers. This building site was in addition one of most important of the time: the channel and the Barrage of Jonage were used to feed the hydroelectric Usine of Cusset. With its setting in water, this channel was longest of Europe feeding a factory of this type and it involved the highest investment carried out in this sector in France!

Its situation with the doors of the Lyons Agglomération makes today of Jonage a residential borough appreciated for its calm and its quality of life. Serenity still increased by the presence of the Park of Miribel-Jonage, one of more natural big spaces périurbains of Europe.
