Jon Vickers

Jon (Jonathan Stewart) Vickers is a Canadian Ténor , born the October 29th 1926 with Prince Albert in Saskatchewan. After a musical formation with Toronto, it begins with London in 1956 and with Bayreuth in 1958. He was the heroic tenor more requested years 1960.

A particularly powerful voice and with the nuances seems it infinite, as well as a physique massive and square made of him a specialist in the heaviest roles of the repertory: Siegmund, Tristan, Otello (Made green), Énée, Samson. It was also a Florestan, a Peter Grimes and a famous Parsifal.

Jon Vickers had the reputation always to believe any knowledge (reproach addressed by Birgit Nilsson) and to take freedoms sometimes shocking with the parts which he interpreted (Benjamin Britten was horrified by its interpretation at Peter Grimes). In fact, as much the technique of Vickers is perfect and its large expressivity, as much its tendency to vocal Histrionisme is sometimes obvious ( Tristan and Isolde directed by Herbert von Karajan), like its incapacity to pronounce German correctly.

Jon Vickers is an enthusiastic Christian, reason for which he had always refused to interpret the title role of Siegfried , that he considered too pagan. The same character in the Twilight of the gods appeared more acceptable to him, but once it had finally felt ready with that, the occasion was never given to him to interpret it.
