Origin

The English term “Jolly Roger” would be a deformation of " pretty rouge" , red being the initial color of certain houses of the French pirates. In fact, the captains had sometimes two houses: one black or white to intimate to the boat hailed the order to go without combat; the second red (which was generally painted with blood) meant " no the quartier" and dead ensured for all the crew of the boat approached. The death's-head and the tibiae, the most known symbols were already present at the XVe century. The Saber is another element which appears sometimes and symbolizes the force, the sand glass to which sometimes wings were added symbolizes the escape of time. The houses red were also used by some Corsaires.

Sometimes nowadays, of the pleasure boats raise in a humorous way the " flag pirate". Many thinks that they are exposed to a fine, the sending of such a house would be actually punished by the law. However, no statutory text prohibits the use of this house, hoisted under the arrows port side.
