The Joint Research Center (JRC) is the scientific and technical research laboratory of the European Union. This Head office of the European commission was created with an aim of bringing the scientific advices and technical know-how necessary to support the political orientations chosen by the EU.
Mission
The mission of the Joint Research Center is to provide a scientific and technical support
with the design, with the development, the implementation and the follow-up of the Community policies
while answering at the requests of those. As a service of the European commission, it
Joint Research Center plays for the Union the part of center of reference as regards
science and of technology. Near to the development process of the policies, it serves the interest
commun run of the Member States while being independent of the private interests, deprived or
nationals.
History
Created in
1957 by the treaty of the
European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) as “a Joint Nuclear Research Center”, the JRC lost with the beginning of the year 1970 the “nuclear” adjective in its title following an effort of reconversion which resulted in a diversification in other fields of scientific research.
