Joint Grid system Ginko

The joint grid system Ginko is the company which manages public transport of the town of Besancon. Network of the group Keolis, the exploitation of the urban network is ensured by the means of a contract of public service delegation. It is the Communauté of agglomeration of Large Besancon which controls and develops the Ginko services.

Constituted of a fleet of 280 coaches (for Large Besancon) and bus (for the city-even) of which a quarter rolls to natural gas of city, serving 50 different lines and 846 stations (624 in Besancon and 224 in the other communes). On the territory of the commune of Besancon, the average use of public transport is of 180 voyages per annum and per capita, that is to say the network more used province. Paid to the whole of the community of agglomeration, this figure goes down to 129 voyages per annum and per capita. There exist 4 poles of exchanges, true hyphen between the city and the countryside: Micropolis in the west, Temis in north, Orchamps in the east and Saint-Jacob in the south. Certain stations of city are equipped with the system Tempo which announces to you the latency of the next bus in real-time.

History

In 1887, the Viotte Station and the district of Tarragnoz were connected to the Downtown area by the “Rippert Bus”, of the horse-drawn trams.

Ten years later, on March 21st, 1897, the network is modernized with the appearance of the Besancon-native Electric Trams (TEB), whose deposit was located street Isenbart (small valley of Mouillère), which will traverse four lines: Line 1: Park Viotte > Tarragnoz Line 2: Chaprais > Prefecture Line 3: St Claude > Rivotte Line 4: St Ferjeux > Place of September 4th A means of transport “comfortable, convenient and rapid harmonizes some with the needs for the modern life”. In 1912, the Franco-Belgian Company, which exploits already 27 other networks of tram, deals with the management of the TEB. The 19 cars of the network are replaced, and in 1913, the Funicular of Bregille (cf Left I, III) is created.

But war 39-45 will have been difficult for the life of the Besancon-native trams. In June 1940, the bridges on Doubs are destroyed, and the network sees amputee of all the part located in the loop. To the rush hours, the place of September 4th and the districts of Montrapon, Rosement and of Cras were connected by buses to gasoline. Those were requisitioned by the Germans in 1942 to transport the French of the area assigned to the “Service of Obligatory Work”, in Germany. One night of April 1943, a fire destroys the garage, the buses and the tools. July 16th of the same year, the deposit is destroyed by an air raid.

After the war, transport in common residents of Besancon makes pale figure. In 1947, the Company, which undergoes already a catastrophic financial crisis, in is obliged to apply the general fall of the tariffs issued by the government. Since 1948, the complete reorganization of the network is essential. At this point in time in 1952, one sees appearing buses in Besancon.

July 9th, 1952, the line of Saint Claude accommodates a bus to replace the tram, as a test. The city decides then, with the Company, to modernize the totality of the network. The city ensures the company a guarantee of receipts revised according to the economic fluctuations and of traversed mileage. The 36 December 1952, 11 buses Renault (that is to say 645 sitted places) are brought into service. Considered to be “Imposing and Elegant”, the bus offers to the travellers new conveniences, very appreciated: accessibility, interior clearness, absence of emanations, flexibility and stability of the suspension…

Between 1950 and 1970, Besancon knows a population growth among strongest of France. Its population doubles in less than 30 years. A modern zone is constituted. The great whole of Grette, Palente, Orchamps and Montrapon rises, while the University campus, as well as the colleges Montjoux and Pergaud are created. The network thus develops very quickly, since 1953: The traffic is multiplied by two in 4 years, by three in 10 years, quadruplet of 1950 to 1970. Thus in 1961, the company of the TEB, name become obsolete since the network did not accommodate from now on any more trams, decides to change name and become the CTB, Compagnie of Transport of Besancon. The CTB settles in 1964 rue de Trey, site still of topicality today. In 1968, the city signs a convention with the CTB, which marks the revival of the Besancon-native urban transport. But once again, the network knows vexations: the anarchistic flood of cars paralyzes the city, mutilates the life of the city. The buses are been sulky, and ensure only 15% of displacements. Pollution reaches dramatic records. Besancon awakes in 1971, when the Ministry for Transport retain Besancon as a city-pilot. The city builds a coherent overall plan then “circulation - transport”

In 1974, Besancon plays the part of precursor while launching its new traffic organization, innovator, based on the complementarity of the means of transports.

  • Creation of pedestrian spaces
  • Suppression of the circulation of transit in the center
  • Priority with public transport
  • total Improvement of quality
The experiment causes a curiosity without precedent, abroad. This plan is concretized by a new public grid system and an offer equivalent to the double of the national average: twice more bus, new lines, two lines of minibus, ways reserved, a “red axis” reserved for the Downtown area. Certain correspondences are free, and the network accommodates a hundred recently qualified drivers 90% of the residents of Besancon are served with less 300m of their residence.

Some dates:

  • 1975: first world with an assistance system with the exploitation.
  • 1976: first main road with a network of evening/Sunday in a town of this size.
  • 1979: Besancon, French city with the strongest rate of frequentation of her buses.

Examples of innovations:

  • vehicles: articulated, flat floors
  • service road: fast hot lines
  • reception of the travellers: regional center of formation of the drivers
  • punctuality: system of localization of the buses by satellite
  • services: limit of advertisement of the latency of the next buses in the great stations
  • central of multimode information
  • Internet site

Lastly, as from 2002: the urban transport and perish-urban amalgamates, to give the Ginko network.
