Joigny

Joigny is a Commune Frenchwoman located in the department of the Yonne and the area Burgundy.

Its inhabitants is called the Joviniens or the Maillotins .

Geography

The town of Joigny is located at the center of the Département of Yonne, at 27 km in the north of Auxerre, 30 km in the south of Sens, 75 km in the west of Troyes and approximately 140 km in the south-east of Paris, on the edges of the Yonne.

History

If the site is occupied at the Neolithic period (several sites attest of it), during the Roman epoch ( Joviniacum in the texts), then during the time mérovingienne, it is the construction of a fortified town at the end of the 10th century by Raynard the old man, count de Sens, who will mark the birth of the current city, officially founded in 996. A Incendie devastated the city in 1530 saving only few wood houses (house of the Arbre of Jessé).

However until the Revolution, it was out of Champagne; the count de Joigny was the first par of this province. The primitive city was built on a headland of the cuesta plate of Othe, dominating the broad river, as much protection which transportation route, its bridge and its rich person valley favourable with the pastures and the culture as well food as cereal. This situation, strategic position, were also the reason of its richness: culture of the vine on the slopes limestones, at least until the appearance of the Phylloxera. The city was also victim of the bombardments during the Second world war. The Midsummer's Day place besides was strongly touched by these bombardments just like the Midsummer's Day door as well as the house of the Baillif where the frontage before was puffed up there. It was then renovated then restored historic building as before Guerre.

The city accommodates since 1949 the 28e geographical group, which is the single unit of military geography of the Army.

July 11th, 2007, the maillotine city was the host of the arrival of the fourth stage of the Tour de France 2007, started 193 km more in north, since the commune of Villers-Cotterêts. She saw gaining the Norwegian Thor Hushovd at the time of an exciting sprint in front of the Town hall, in 4:37 min 47 S.

The city also accommodated the Équipe of France of football at the time of its match with Auxerre vis-a-vis the Georgia cash for the eliminating heats of the Euro 2008. They slept in the Hotel of Left bank during two days.
