John von Neumann , mathematician and American Physicist of Hungarian origin , contributed important shares as well in quantum Mécanique, as in functional analyzes, in Set theory, Informatique, Economic scenes like in much of other fields of mathematics and physics. It moreover took part in the American military programs.

Biography

Benjamin of a phratry of three, it is called first of all Neumann János Lajos (the Hungarians place family names at the head) with Budapest in Austria-Hungary. He is the son of Neumann Miksa (max Neumann), a lawyer-banker, and of Kann Margit (Marguerite Kann), both Juif S not-practitioners.

János is a Child prodigy: at six years, he converses with his old father in Greek and can mentally make the division of a number with eight digits. An anecdote reports that at eight years, it already read forty-four volumes of the universal Histoire of the family library and that it entirely memorized them: equipped with a eidetic Memory, it will be able to quote of memory of the whole pages of books read of the years before. It enters to the college Lutheran of Budapest ( Budapesti Evangélikus Gimnázium ) in 1911.

In 1913, his/her father buys a title Austro-Hungarian and Neumann János becomes János von Neumann which will be anglicized, in the years 1930, as a John von Neumann at the time of the emigration in the United States (whereas his/her brothers choose for patronyms Newman and Vonneumann). It is old hardly 23 years that it receives its Ph.D. in Mathématiques (with the minor ones in experimental Physique and Chimie) of the Université of Budapest. In parallel, it obtains the diploma of the federal polytechnic school of Zurich at the request of his father and on the councils of Theodore von Karman, eager that his/her son invests himself in a sector remunerative than mathematics.

Between 1926 and 1930, it is Privatdozent with Berlin and Hamburg. He also works with Göttingen with Robert Oppenheimer under the direction of David Hilbert. During this “German period”, one of most fertile of its life, it côtoie also Werner Heisenberg and Kurt Gödel. In 1930, Von Neumann is professor-guest with the Université Princeton. Then, of 1933 with its death in 1957, he is mathematics professor with the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study which has just been created. It thus joined there Albert Einstein and Kurt Gödel.

It Marie first once in 1930, with Mariette Kövesi with whom he has a girl, Marina born in 1935 (later professor with the Université of Michigan and economic adviser of the president Nixon). He would have proposed the marriage with Mariette while noticing: “One will be able to have fun both, seen at which point one likes to drink”. They divorce in 1937. One year later, John von Neumann marries Klara daN.
