John the Square

John the Square , of its true name David John Moore Cornwell , is a British novelist , born the October 19th 1931 with Poole (the United Kingdom).

He studied at the University of Bern in Suisse and with the Université of Oxford to the the United Kingdom, then taught some time with the college of Eton before joining the Foreign Office during five years. It was recruited by MI6 whereas it was in station with Hamburg, it wrote its first news in 1961, being always in active service. Its career within the Brittanique intelligence service ended after its cover was compromised by a double agent, Kim Philby, working for the KGB.

John the Square is the author of many spy novel being held in the context of the Cold war, in particular those putting in scene George Smiley in the trilogy Karla . Its work is contrary to the traditional mythology of the spy to the James Bond: its heroes are much more complex and much more discrete. The structure of its novels is very elaborate and the action holds only one reduced place to with it. The Square found, after the end of the Cold war, to widen its inspiration towards more contemporary subjects.

He currently lives in Cornouailles.

Since the House Russia (1989), its works are translated into French " to four mains" by the former singer of jazz Mimi Perrin, which founded the vocal group the Double-Six, and his/her daughter, Isabelle.

Adaptations

Two of the novels of the trilogy of Karla, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy ( the Mole ) and Smiley' S People ( People of Smiley ), were adapted by BBC in televised series, where the role of Smiley was held by Alec Guinness.
