John de Chastelain

The general Alfred John Gardyne Drummond de Chastelain, OC, CM, CD, CH, LL.D., BA (born the July 30th 1937 with Bucharest, Romania) are a Canadian soldier with the retirement and a diplomat. It was named “Chief of staff of the defense of Canada” (named twice), ambassador of the Canada to the the United States, chief of the International commission independent on demilitarization of Northern Ireland.

Biography

John de Chastelain is a British subject born in Romania. He started to study in “Fettes College” of Edinburgh, in Scotland for a military career. He has immigrant in Canada in 1955 and was received Canadian citizen in 1962. It joint with the militia like private in Calgary Highlanders. In 1956, of Chastelain is transferred in the army and admitted with the royal military Collège of Canada (CMR) where it obtains a baccalaureat are arts in history in 1960. It was useful with the Canadian light Infantry of the princess Patricia (PPCLI). It was ordering CMR, assistant commander of the mobile Force, assistant deputy minister (Personal) and vice-chief of staff of Defense. The Prime Minister Mulroney the pupil with the General rank of and names it Chief of staff of the defense of Canada (CEMD) in September 1989. of Chastelain the Canadian Armed forces directs at the end of the Cold war, during the Crise of Oka, the Guerre of the Gulf and at the time of the mission in Somalia in 1993.

In 1993, it was tranféré with the Réserve and was appointed ambassador of the Canada to the the United States. In 1994, it was recalled in the regular Forces and was named again Chief of staff of the defense of Canada, station which it left in December 1995.

Since November 1995, of Chastelain is named on the International commission independent on demilitarization of Northern Ireland which it directs since 1997.

In 1985, of Chastelain is made Commandeur about the Military Merit; in 1991, it is made Commandeur about St-Jean; in 1993, it received the Medal of the Merit and of the honor of the Greece and it is made Officier of the Ordre of Canada; in 1995, it is made Commandeur of the Legion of the Merit of the the United States and in 1999, Compagnon of honor.
