John Slidell

John Slidell (born with New York in 1793 and deceased with London the July 29th 1871) is a man Politique and Diplomate states-unien.

Graduate of right to the Columbia University in 1810, it begins his career like business man, but moves with the New-Orleans in Louisiana, after the Guerre of 1812 caused the bankruptcy of its company. Launched in the policy, he essuie first of all several electoral failures (with the Congress in 1828 then with the Senate in 1834, 1836 and still 1848), he is finally elected District attorney (Procureur) of 1829 with 1833 then representing of Louisiana to the congress where he will serve of the March 4th 1843 until his resignation the November 10th 1845.

In 1845, it is sent like representative of the government to the Mexico by the president James Knox Polk with like mandate the negotiation of an agreement between the two countries defining the Río Grande like southern border of the Texas. The Mexican government refuses to accept this agreement what will cause the declaration of war of the United States the May 13rd 1846.

He is elected senator of Louisiana the December 5th 1853 to replace Pierre Soulé, resigner; he is then re-elected at this station until in 1861. Influencing Democratic senator, it pushes the candidature of James Buchanan for the presidency and becomes a member of his administration.

With the release of the American Civil War, Slidell joined the cause confederated. Named in 1861 representing government near the France, it is one of the two diplomats, with James Mr. Mason implied in the Affaire of the Trent which failed déclancher a war between the Great Britain and the the United States when its ship was hailed by U.S. Navy and that it was made prisoner.

With the resolution of this business, the two diplomats are finally authorized to join Europe and approach in England on January 1st 1862. Receipt very in a friendly way by the French Emperor Napoleon III, it however does not obtain any recognition or helps of its share. After the end of the American Civil War, Slidell decides to remain in Europe. He dies in England the July 9th 1871 and buried in the family vault to the cemetery of Saint-Novel to Villejuif.

In Louisiana, the town of Slidell was named thus in its honor. He is the brother of Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, a naval officer, ordering the US Somers on which, in 1842 three men of crew were hung for mutiny at sea.
