John Oldcastle

Sir John Oldcastle (v. 1378 - December 14th 1417), was a leader Lollard English. He was judged for heresy against the Church, but managed to escape from the Tour of London. Captured again, it was carried out, and became a Martyr. It is supposed to be the model which was used with the Falstaff as Shakespeare. He married Joan the heiress of the title of baron de Cobham, which enabled him to sit at the Parliament. He was also known as a " good Cobham" lord;.

Biography

  • 1378 : Birth of the son of Mr Richard Oldcastle d' Almeley in the Herefordshire.
  • 1400 : Is useful in forwarding towards the Scotland.
  • 1401 : Takes the load of the castle of Builth.
  • 1404 : Oldcastle represents Herefordshire at the Parliament.
  • 1408 : Marry Jeanne, the heiress of the lord Cobham.
  • 1411 : Obtains confidence, the regard and the friendship of Henri V, Prince de Galles who sends it in forwarding in France.
  • 1413 : Henri V reasons Oldcastle, but the knight obstinately refuses to embrace l'" church mère". Its devotion with the lesson of John Wyclif brings to him the judgment for heresy against the Église of England. Excommunicated, it is stopped the September 23rd. Managing to escape from the Turn of London, it takes refuge with the Wales.
  • 1414 : Reward for 500 marks (£) offered by the king for the capture of Lord Cobham.
  • 1417 : Taken close to Welshpool in November by the lord Edouard de Charlton de Powys, it is led to London. Condemned, carried out and hung above a slow fire, he dies as a martyr the December 14th.

Falstaff of Shakespeare is based partly on him.
