John Lawrence Leconte or LeConte is a American Entomologiste , born the May 13rd 1825 with New York and dead the November 15th 1883 with Philadelphia.
He is the son of the naturalist John Eatton LeConte (1784-1860) and of Mary Anne born Lawrence; its family counts several generations of scientists. He makes his studies with Mount Saint Mary College and obtains his title of doctor of medicine in 1846 at the medical school of New York. During its studies, it makes several voyages in particular in the Rocky Mountains and on the Higher Lac. In 1848, it accompanies Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) in a voyage to the Higher Lake. Of 1846 with 1861, it studies the Zoogéographie and the Entomologie. In 1849, LeConte leaves in California and explores the river Colorado until in 1851. In 1852, it settles with Philadelphia where it resides until its death. Of 1861 with 1865, he is voluntary doctor in the American army where he reaches the rank of lieutenant-colonel. It Marie the January 10th 1861 with Helen Grier. It becomes, in 1865, doctor-inspector all while being devoted to the Minéralogie, the Géologie and with entomology. Of 1878 with 1883, he is senior registrar in Philadelphia. It makes several scientific voyages, in particular with the Honduras in 1867, with Panama, in Europe, Algérie and Egypt.
It chairs the American Academy off Arts and Sciences in 1874 and is the vice-president of the American Philosophical Society of 1880 with 1883. LeConte takes part in the foundation of the American entomological Société and is member of the National Academy off Sciences. Leconte is in particular the author of One the Classification off the Carabidae off the United States (1862-1873), of which a part is cosignée with George Henry Horn (1840-1897), New Species off North American Coleoptera (1866, 1873), The Rhynchophora off America North off Mexico City (1876), and takes part off in Classification the Coleoptera off North American (1883).
