John Illingworth
John Illingworth is a naval Architecte British, born in 1903 and died in 1980. Also captain in the Royal Navy, it is often called the founding father of the modern oceanic race.
In 1937, it makes to draw by another architect Maid off Malham , one of first sailing ships with gréement at the head (i.e. the sail of before goes up until in top of the mast), with a broad front triangle, which became the standard for the majority of the monoshells current. This boat gains its first race and number of the following ones.
John Illingworth is then captain in the Pacific during the Second world war. Once returned peace, it is with Sydney, where it proposes to create a oceanic race, which is done already with the the United States and in Europe: it is the Sydney-Hobart which leaves the December 26th 1945; Illingworth is then skipper of Rami . The race celebrated in 2004 its 60e edition and share traditionally the shortly after Christmas.
Once returned to England, Illingworth is elected commodore RORC, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, where it will make the promotion of the race to the broad one, modern version. It is interested in particular in the gréements, and recommends for example light displacements, the lengthened gréements, the reduction of the emménagements.
The sailing ship Myth off Malham illustrates its ideas and starts the polemics at the time of its setting to water: quasi vertical stem, light, back displacement truncated, important freeboard, all is contrary to the traditional tendency. Olin Stephens critic severely. However, this boat gains Fastnet in 1947, and Admiral' S Cup lately created in 1957.
John Illigworth opens a cabinet of naval architecture in the years 1950, and the orders flow, in particular of France.

It took part in very many races of motorboat (before the war) and has to gain the very many ones cuts. It is after its quasi invincibility in motorboat that it is put has to draw sailing ships (a little more than 1.100), mainly intended for the races at sea.
