John Richard Hicks (April 8th, 1904 - May 20th, 1989) British economist and prize winner of the “Nobel Prize” of economy in 1972, is one of the most important and influential economists of the 20th century.

He is the creator of the Modèle IS/LM, which is a transcription of the general Théorie of John Maynard Keynes in neo-classic terms. The model defines a relation between interest rates I and the income there . The curve IS represents the situations for which the investment is equal to the saving (S for Savings in English) and the curve LM , the request for liquidity L of currency is equal to the offer M of currency. Model IS/LM made of John Hicks the first of the Néo-keynésien S.

John Hicks makes appear an outline of his modeling in the article Keynes and the Classics in 1937, one year after the publication of the general Théorie . Its model represents the balance of the economic system when it there has at the same time balance on the market of the goods and services, represented by relation IS, and balances on the financial market, represented by relation LM. The intersection of the curves representative of these two relations is called the " cross hicksienne". In addition, it is a macroeconomic model with system of fixed price, which gives a tool to establish a budget policy or monetary, for the public authorities.

John Hicks and Paul Samuelson is regarded as “the fathers” of the current traditional microeconomy, and the neo-classic Synthèse.
