John Henry Pope

Biography

John Henry Pope was born in the canton from Eaton, with the Quebec, the December 19th 1819. He grows there and made his studies there. Ambitious, it was first of all devoted to make farm of his father one of best of the county. But, following the Rebellion of 1837-1838, its implication in the militia of Eaton will lead it to be interested in the local policy. Thus during the Years 1840, it became representing canton of Eaton within the council of county of Sherbrooke. Convinced Antiaméricain, it was opposed actively to the movement Annexionniste which appeared in the townships starting from 1849.

Candidate demolishes in Sherbrooke in 1851 and 1853, like in new the Comté of Compton in 1854, it is finally elected there without opposition in 1858. Constantly re-elected thereafter, he will be elected appointed preserving with the House of Commons in 1867. Minister for Agriculture in the government Macdonald of 1871 with 1873 and of 1878 with 1885, he was also Minister for the Railroads and the Channels of 1884 with 1889.

Associated with Cyrus S. Clarke, of Portland cement in the Maine, he became owner of the Brompton Mills Lumber Company, a vast sawmill located at Bromptonville.

He was also one of principal the promoter of the international Railroad of Saint-François and Mégantic which allowed the railway development of the county of Compton and which was sold with Canadian Pacifique in 1887. In addition to its active implication in the development and the colonization of the area of Mégantic, Pope was cofounder of the Eastern Townships Bank, of the Manufacture Lump of Sherbrooke and administrator of the Company of the water capacities and the Sherbrooke Gas and Water. It was also interested in mining.

Deceased with Ottawa, on April 1st 1889 at the 69 years age, it was buried with the cemetery Anglican of Cookshire.
