John Hawkwood

John Hawkwood , known as in French Jean Haccoude and in Italian Giovanni Acuto , born towards 1320 and died in 1394, is famous a Mercenaire Moyen-âge living at the 14th century and considered as being the first Condottiere modern times.

Born in England, in Sible Hedingham, towards 1320, it takes part in the Guerre One hundred Year old, with the service of the king Edouard III of England against the France. A little later it creates its own company of warriors and confusion the south of France, in particular the Provence, before passing in Italy towards 1360. In search of glory and fortune, it puts in turn at the service Pisans, which use it against the Florentins in 1364, then lords of Milan. In this city, he married, in 1377, Donnina, the natural girl of Barnabé Visconti, lord of Milan and his mistress Montanina de Lazzari. A little later it enters to the service of the pope Gregoire XI, and finally, of Florentins. The latter forgive him the fact of having guided the troops pisanes against them: John Hawkwood, accepted well by the population, becomes “Giovanni Acuto” and makes himself popular quickly.

He dies in Florence in 1394.

Florentins made him honor after its death, by setting up a decorated equestrian monument of frescos of Paolo Uccello.
