John Flamsteed

John Flamsteed (August 19th 1646, Derby - December 31st 1719) is a British Astronome . He is the author of a system of projection for the construction of the charts as well as a stellar designation still used nowadays: the Designation of Flamsteed.

It was the first in charge of astronomical work to the observatory of Greenwich (1676). With extremely imperfect means, it obtained marvellous results.

One has of him: Historia caelestis Britannica , 1712 and 1725 (it is one of the richest deposits of observations; one finds a catalog of 2866 stars there). One owes him splendid celestial Atlas, 1729. He proposed for the construction of the charts a projection which differs from that of Mercator and which is known under the name of projection of Flamsteed .
