Biography
Beginnings
John Cale was born the March 9th 1942 in Crynant, in the south of Wales, his native tongue is the Welsh. His/her father is underground worker and his mother teacher. Very early, it shows good provisions for the music, it is sent to Goldsmith College of London for a traditional formation, it studies the violin, the piano and the guitar. In 1963, it takes down the purse Leonard Bernstein which enables him to integrate the Eastman academy into Tanglewood, in the Massachusetts, to learn the modern composition there. Six months later, it settles with New York where it meets in particular John Cage with which it takes part (as well as other pianists) in the creation of the Vexations of Erik Satie, a musical performance which lasts 18 hours. Other meetings, Tony Conrad, Aaron Copland and Assemble It Young who introduce it into the adventure of the Dream Syndicate (Theater off Eternal Music). It is at that time that he discovers the Rock and that he becomes acquainted with Lou Reed.
The Velvet Underground
The meeting between Hold and Reed gives rise to the Velvet Underground in 1965. The original formation, which takes the name of Primitives , is a quartet to which unite Conrad (of Dream Syndicate) and Walter Of Maria a sculptor who is also percussionnist. These two members do not remain and their replacement transforms the group in which the singer Nico punctually will take part. From its formation, Cale brings many elements external with the world of the rock'n'roll: repetitive music, work and experiments on the sound. It takes part in the design, the writing and the recording of the first two albums of the group The Velvet Underground and Nico and White Light/White Heat , which are commercial failures. He sings on some songs and takes care of the keyboards and the low guitar. Its experiments are not taste of Lou Reed and it is probably a quarrel of ego which precipitates the departure of Hold in 1968.
Career solo
Its career solo begins in 1970, with Vintage Violence . In parallel of a personal discography, it will be essential like a producer of foreground. The following year, he collaborates with the American Compositeur Terry Riley on Church off Anyhrax , a work of repetitive music, kind which he continues on Academy in Danger . In 1972, it joined Nico and Reed with Paris for a single concert with the Bataclan. 1973 sees the exit of Paris 1919 which is regarded as one of the discs emblematic of the decade 1970, an album with the many references and musicalement very elaborate. Of return to London, it signs with the recording company Island Records a contract which will enable him to leave the personal discs at an intensive pace. June 1,1974 is the recording in a concert given to London (Rainbow) with Kevin Ayers, Brian Eno and Nico, it acts of a version of Heartbreak Hotel of Elvis Presley. Fear is an album rock'n'roll in which Eno and Phil Manzanera collaborate, the guitarist of Roxy Music.Parallel to its own discography, it intervenes as producer near many artists, which one can retain Squeeze, Patti Smith, Sham 69, The Stooges and The Modern Lovers. He is sometimes regarded as a precursor of the music Punk and also the inspirer of Magazine or Joy Division.
In 1993, Velvet Underground is reformed for a round, this new formation includes/understands Cale, Reed, Maureen Tucker and Sterling Morrison. An album of it is drawn: Live MCMXCIII .
In 1999, it gives a concert to Cardiff at the time of the festivities given for the creation of the National Assembly of Wales.
Was an autobiographical book published in collaboration with Victor Bockis, What' S Welsh for Zen? Bloomsbury, the USA.
