John Edward Gray

John Edward Gray is a British zoologist , born the February 12th 1800 with Walsall and dead the March 7th 1875. He is the oldest brother of George Robert Gray, also zoologist. Their father is Samuel Frederick Gray (1766-1828), a pharmacologist and a famous Botaniste at his time.
Its family settles rather early with London where Gray starts to study the Médecine at 16 years. He becomes the assistant of his father when this one writes off The Natural Arrangement British Plants (1821). After refusebeing refused with the Company linnéenne of London, it is diverted Botanique and is devoted to the Zoologie. He works, starting from 1824, at the department of zoology of the British Museum where he helps John George Children with the drafting of the catalog of the collections of Reptile S. In 1840, he replaces Children at the station of conservative of this department, function which he will occupy until Christmas 1874.
He publishes several catalogs of the collections of the natural history museum in which he analyzes the animal groups but also described news Espèce S. He takes an active part in the enrichment of the collections of zoology of the British Museum which becomes among most important of the world. It is estimated that a million additional specimens come to be added to the collections during the direction of Gray.
It publishes very many titles, close to 1 200, mainly in zoology. It is often about repetitive catalog and lack critical analysis. In 1832, he becomes member of the Royal Society.
Gray is also interested in the Philatélie. May 1st 1840, when the first Penny Black is put on sale, it acquires of several specimens of it, becoming thus the first Philatéliste world. It seems that he was one of the first to propose a rate of uniform stamping for the postal sending, thus preparing the arrival of the stamp.
The Crabier of Gray ( Ardeola grayii ), of the family of the Héron S (Ardeidae), was dedicated to him by the colonel William Henry Sykes (1790-1872).
