Known especially for its many attempts at meeting of the Protesting S Europeans, task to which it devoted all its existence as from 1628. Influenced by the school of the ramism and by the Utopias of the beginning of the century (of which those of Bacon, Campanella or Johann Valentine Andreae), he especially sought to induce a methodical analysis of the disunion and developed various irenic methods to mitigate the separation of the Protestants, mainly directed towards a practical Christianisme.

Father of the contemporary oecumenism, a friendly time of Grotius and in contact with Descartes, it was with Samuel Hartlib (1600-1662) and Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) one of the members of the circle of English intellectuals at the origin of the Royal Society whose his/her son-in-law, Henry Oldenbourg, friend of Spinoza, were the first secretary.
