John Drake Sloat

John Drake Sloat (July 6th 1781 - November 28th 1867) was a commodore United States Navy known to have asserted in the name of the the United States of America the California in 1846.

It was born with Sloatsburg (New York), of Dutch, orphan origin very young, his/her father was killed by a British soldier two months before his birth and his/her mother will die a few years later. It will be raised by his maternal grandparent.

It is Midshipman of Navy in 1800, and becomes sailing master on the frigate US '' United States '' under the orders of Commodore Stephen Decatur at the time of the Guerre of 1812. It is promoted Lieutenant for remarkable bravery at the time of the capture of the frigate HMS '' Macedonian ''.

Sloat is useful then on the '' Grampus '', the '' Franklin '', the '' Washington '', and the '' St Louis ''. In 1844 it is named ordering squadron of the Pacific, and in 1845, whereas the tensions with the Mexico grow, it receives the order to accost in High California and to assert it in the name of the United States. By receiving a report/ratio indicating of the engagements to the border of the Texas, whereas it is with broad Mazatlán, it sinks towards north (reports/ratios indicate that the British are them also interested by California), at the time of a skirmish that some call the Bataille of Monterey , hoists the American flag on the building of the customs with Monterey the July 7th 1846, and publishes a proclamation announcing that California is part from now on of the United States.

Later, its health the constrained one to give up the command with the sea, as a officer staff, it contributes to the creation of the naval base of Mare Island Navy Yard.

After its retirement in 1866 it is promoted Rear Admiral. He dies in New Brighton (New York) the November 28th 1867.
