John Clayton (botanist)

John Clayton is a British Botaniste , born towards 1685 or 1686 and dead the December 15th 1773 in Virginia.

It arrives in America in 1705. He is assistant of clerk of 1705 with 1722 then first clerk of 1722 with 1773. He collects many botanical specimens in Virginia which will be determined by Laurentius Theodorus Gronovius (1730-1777) in its Flora Virginia of 1739. Part of its collection is preserved today by the Natural History Museum of London. Carl von Linné (1707-1778) dedicated to him in 1753 of the Claytonia of Portulacaceae.
