John Carisi
John E. Carisi is a Trompettiste, Arrangeur and Compositeur of American Jazz born in 1922 with Hasbrouck Heights (New Jersey and died with New York in 1992).
Biography
Born in 1922, John Carisi begins as trumpet player and, sometimes arranger, in or dance band swing like those of Babe Russin, George Handy and Herbie Fields (1938-1943). In 1944, it joined l'" US Band" Air Force; of Glenn Miller. He works then in the " Shift" swing; of Ray McKinley and in the orchestras of Lou Stein) and, especially, that of Claude Thornhill. In parallel, he writes also arrangements for Big band S in which he does not play like those of Charlie Barnet, Benny Goodman or Woody Hermann. It is also the time of the beginning of a long friendship with the saxophonist Brew Moore avce who it will often play.
In 1948-50, it takes part in the adventure of the little nun of Miles Davis at the side of the arrangers Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis. It is, for this reason, one of the craftsmen of the creation of the Cool jazz. John Carisi composes and arranges for the training of Miles Davis four titles. Only one is recorded: " Israel" (cf album " Birth off the cool" of Miles Davis at Capitol) which since became a standard of the jazz taken again by many jazzmen (Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan…).
In the Fifties, it follows the teaching of the type-setter Stefan Wolpe and improves its instrumental technique with Carmine Caruso. He collaborates regularly with theorists of the " Third stream music" (attempt at “fusion” between traditional and jazz) and writes some ambitious works (sonatas, concertos…) who have the merit to avoid the side “fireman” often inherent in this style. In 1960, it makes a round in Far East organized by the State Department. In 1961, he is the type-setter and the arranger of face 1 of the album " Into the Hot" (1961) published under the name of Gil Evans (this last formed only the link between musicians and label). Starting from this date, it carries out face a career of type-setter (“erudite” works but also compositions for the cinema, television, the theater or of the jazz bands…), of trumpet player (occurring in club with, in particular, his/her friend Brew Moore) and of teacher (with the Manhattan School off Music then with the Queen College).
He dies in New York in 1992.
