He is initially elected with the Chambre of Parliament of Nova Scotia in 1967. He becomes chief of the Parti progressist-conservative Nova Scotia in 1971 and becomes Prime Minister of Nova Scotia in 1978, making countryside under the nickname of " Honest John".
Its mandate of Prime Minister is marked by the economic crisis: at the time of its retirement, 8 billion $ had been added to the provincial debt (including a deficit, one year, of more than 600 million $). Buchanan importement plays a part in the repatriation of the constitution as a member of the " group huit" and a role even more important plays as a one of the main allies of Brian Mulroney during the negotiations surrounding the Accord of the lake Meech. It raises the controversy when it declares that if the agreement of Meech had suddenly failed, the Nova Scotia should plan to join the the United States of America. It withdraws its comments the day following after a considerable outcry.
In 1990, it leaves the provincial policy and is named with the Sénat of Canada by Mulroney. This decision raised the controversy with the country since it was under investigation for accusations of corruption; the nomination belonged to a great number of nominations to the Senate for the vote on the Taxe on the products and services (TPS). The Ottawa Citizen qualifies the " nomination; the most terrible act of the patronage and more scorning Mulroney." government; Buchannan had offered certain senatorial seats Nova Scotians to the provinces of the Western during the negotiations of the lake Meech, and if its offer had been accepted, there would not have been of seat available for him.
Buchanan sits under the banner of the Parti progressist-conservative until in 2004 when the party amalgamates with the Canadian Alliance. It sits from now on as senator for the Conservative party of Canada.
