John Boyd Dunlop
John Boyd Dunlop , born in the county North Ayrshire in Scotland the February 5th 1840 and died in Dublin the October 23rd 1921, is a Scottish inventor , founder the company of tires which bears its name.
It is born in a farm in Dreghorn, in the county of North Ayrshire. It makes then studies of veterinary surgeon to the Université of Edinburgh then follows this occupation during nearly 10 years at his place, before leaving for Belfast, in Ireland, 1867.
Meanwhile, in 1839 Charles Goodyear deposits the patent of the Vulcanization rubber and in 1845 the Scot Robert William Thomson, invents the first tire starting from rubber binding stuck on a rim, of which it deposits a patent in 1846. Alas, the lack of robustness of the tire and impossibility of finding an application practical to its invention, make that William Thomson gives up her patent of `wheel to air'.
In 1887, John Boyd does Dunlop without knowing appear the invention of W. Thomson, with the idea to surround the wheels out of wooden of the Bicyclette of his/her son with rubber tubes filled of air in order to improve comfort of it (?), noise (?), speed (?) and/or adherence to road.
Its tire has an immediate success in the world of the bicycle, the great champions of the time use it successfully. John Boyd Dunlop deposits the Brevet tire with air with valve on December 7th 1888. But the invention of Dunlop does not allow an easy repair in the event of puncture. In 1891 Edouard and André Michelin invent the first dismountable tire with a tire tube.
In margin of the bicycle, the invention of Dunlop (and technical innovations of the Michelin brothers) arrive at one crucial period of the development of the Automobile and especially of the Motocyclette, its invention finds an immediate application thus.
Dunlop yields its patent to William Harvey Of the Cross-country race against 1500 shares of the company lately created. Finally it does not make great fortune of its invention.
1891 Edouard and André Michelin invent the first dismountable tire with a tire tube.
The invention of the tire (rubber envelope), single contact point with the road will not be possible that after the invention in 1839 by Charles Goodyear of the Vulcanization of rubber. -->
