John Berkeley

John Berkeley (1602 - August 28th 1678), 1st baron Berkeley de Stratton, was governor of Exeter and a general of the forces of Charles I {{er}} in Devon.
It was the fifth wire to sir Maurice Berkeley, and brother of William, governor of the Virginia.
Ordering English armed in 1638, against the Scottish troops, it is made knight by Charles Ier of England.
Partisan of the king at the time of the First revolution English, it is named governor of Exeter and general of the armed with Devon.
He thus takes part in the escape from the royal family in 1652 and holds the first rank of the court of the Duc of York. May 19th 1658, it is high with the row of par of England with the title of baron Berkeley de Startton, in Somerset.
With the restoration in 1660, he is member of the Private Council of the king and Lord lieutenant d' Irlande (1670-1672). He will also obtain many possessions in America, including 1/8 of the Carolines.
He makes party of the signatories of the Concession and Agreement , text proclaiming the freedom of worship and of religion in America.
In 1675, it is named Ambassador extraordinary with Versailles.
