Johannisthal

Johannisthal is a district of Berlin located in the district of Treptow-Köpenick. Johannisthal was integrated in 1920 in the " Large-Berlin " ( Groß-Berlin ).

Johannisthal was undoubtedly named thus according to the Kolonienherrn Kammerrat Johann Wilhelm Werner († 1754).

Geography

Johannisthal was delimited in the south and south-west by the Berlin Wall which separated it from West Berlin.

History

The village of Johannisthal was not mentioned yet in the " register " ( Landbuch ) of 1375. First mention dated November 16th, 1753. Its first inhabitants were inter alia Cordier S come from the Palatinat.

In 1880, Johannisthal deveint a railway station on the line Berlin Görlitz. The station was called until 1920 Niederschöneweide-Johannisthal and since Schöneweide . In 1884, the district accepted name “ Bad” ( the-baths , town of water) but which disappeared quickly following the urbanization.

From 1905 to 1906, the municipality built on plans of the sculptor and architect of Charlottenburg Georg Roensch the town hall of style Néorenaissance, become since a sociocultural center and a museum of the regional traditions.

Aeronautical activities

In 1909, was open the first airport of Germany indicated Motorflugplatz Johannisthal-Adlershof. It is there that in 1913 the Airship Zeppelin LZ-18 was crushed. During the time which preceded the First World War, several aeronautical manufacturers settled there of which Rumpler-Etrich-Taube. The history of the Airmail civil allemande began on February 5th, 1919 there. Starting from this date, the twice-daily flights ensured by the Deutsche Luftreederei (DLR, founded by AEG) transported the mail of the capital (especially the press) towards Weimar where sat the constituent assembly.

This connection " air-mail " could be used at the beginning only by the deputies of the National Assembly which had been moved in Weimar (capital of Thuringe) because of the riots and of the revolutionary situation in Berlin. The line was opened with the public a few months later.

After the Second world war, in 1945, the Red Army used the aérodroport.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the airport was closed definitively in 1995. Space is mainly occupied by a landscape Parc.

Cinematographic activities

In 1920 the company Johannisthaler Filmanstalt GMBH was founded (also called JOFA-ATELIER). It is there that were turned of famous films like:

In 1929, the Talking films made its arrival and the studios were included in the years 1930 by the company Tobis - Filmkunst GMBH.

After the Second world war, DEFA (in addition to Ufa) took again the production site of Tobis . In 1946 was turned-there the first German film of the post-war period, the assassins are among us ( Die Mörder sind unter ones ) with Hildegard Knef in the main role in a setting in scene of Wolfgang Staudte. During following years, the studios were also used for comedies (Gruppe Johannisthal) and work as Synchronization.

Town planning

As from 1953, the first building built starting from ready-made units with an aim of rationalization ( Plattenbau ) was set up on an experimental basis by the Academy of the building of GDR ( Bauakademie DER GDR ) in the street Engelhardstraße with the numbers 11-13. Carl Fieger was one of the principal instigators of this project.

August 13rd, 1961, the district was isolated from the remainder of West Berlin (district of Neukölln) by the construction of the Berlin Wall until its fall in 1989.
