Johannes Sambucus
Johannes Sambucus born in June or July 1531 with Tyrnau (Trnava, Nagyszombat), now located in Republic of Slovakia, and died on June 13rd, 1584 with Vienna, is a doctor, philologist, humanistic, historian, poet, collector of works of art and patron Hungarian.
One also finds his name spelled: Johann Sambucus, Joannes Sambucus, Joannes Bochius, Ioes Sabucus, Sambuci, Zsámboki, Iehan Sambucus, Ján Sambucus, Jean Sambucus, Johannes Pannonicus Sambucus.
Life
From 1542, it begins studies of Philologie to Vienna, then with Leipzig, Wittenberg, Ingolstadt, Strasbourg and Paris. He studies the old languages, the right, the history and philosophy. He is particularly influenced by the texts of Plato. In 1551 he becomes Master are Philosophy at the university of the Sorbonne.From 1558 to 1564 its voyages lead it to Venice, Padoue, Genoa, Naples, Milan, Ghent and Antwerp. At the university of Padoue, it begins studies of medicine, obtains its license in 1555 and is established as doctor in Vienna, which was then a center of the scientific and cultural life of Hungary.
It is during its Italian voyage that Sambucus discovers a kind which makes fury then, the Livre of emblems. For this poet Latinist set on antiquity, it is the ideal form to express its poetic and artistic talent. In 1564 the first edition of its Emblemata appears, followed immediately by five republications which are worth to him an international reputation as Master of the kind. It is the first Hungarian writer whose works are translated into French and English.
