Johannes Magnus

Johannes Magnus , transcription Latin of its name Johannes Blind , (1488-1544) was a Swedish, and last ecclesiastic catholic Archevêque in Sweden.

Born with Linköping, it was named in 1523 by the king Gustave Ier Vasa archbishop of Uppsala, in spite of the opposition of the pope Clément VII, which wished the reinstalment of the preceding archbishop Gustav Trolle, exiled for political reasons. However, it was not long in being opposed to the king with the project conceived by this last to introduce the Réforme in Sweden.

It was withdrawn then with Rome, where his/her brother Olaus Magnus had preceded it to successfully plead his cause near the Pope.

Magnus passed the remainder of its life between Venice and Rome, and wrote two works on Sweden:

  • Historia of slow train Gothorum Sueonumque regibus (Rome, 1554)
  • Historia metropolitanæ ecclesiæ Upsaliensis .
