Johannes Elias Teijsmann

Johannes Elias Teijsmann (or Teysmann ) is a Botaniste Dutch, born on June 1st 1808 with Arnhem and dead the June 22nd 1882 with Buitenzorg.

This gardener becomes the conservative of the Botanical garden of Bogor in 1830 and will devote the remainder of his life to the development of the garden. In 1837, Justus Carl Hasskarl (1811-1894) becomes his assistant. This one convinces it to reorganize the cultures according taxinomic to the S what results in the displacement of many specimens. Only some too large trees remain in their place.

Teijsmann, by its voyages and its purchases, introduced thousands of species into the garden of which Delonix regia , Manihot esculenta and Elaeis guineensis . It makes appear the second catalog of the garden. The first, signed by Carl Ludwig Blume (1789-1862), described 914 species, second 2.800.

Under its direction, the garden plays a great part in the introduction of the culture of the Cinchona which allows the production of Quinine.
