Johanna Spyri

Johanna Spyri (born Johanna Heusser) (June 12th 1827 with Hirzel, Canton of Zurich - July 7th 1901 with Zurich) is a writer E German-speaking Switzerland, author of stories for children and creative of the character of Heidi.

Biography

Johanna Spyri is the fourth of a family of six children. His/her father, Johann Jakob Heusser (1783 - 1859), is doctor, chirugien and welfare man for the mentally ills. His/her mother, Meta Schweizer (1797 - 1876), is the girl of Diethelm Schweizer, Pasteur d' Hirzel, itself type-setter of religious songs and author.

Johanna follows its primary schooling to Hirzel and receives private lessons of Pasteur Solomon Tobler to the cure, between 1833 and 1841. Then, of 1841 with 1843, it continues its formation with Zurich. She learns there in particular the modern languages and the Piano. It is at that time that its friendship with Anna Fries starts, Betsy and Conrad Ferdinand Meyer.

Of 1844 with 1845, it lives with Yverdon-the-Baths, a commune of French-speaking Switzerland. Of return to Hirzel, between 1845 and 1852, it helps to raise his/her two young sisters. It becomes a baited reader then, particularly of Droste-Hülshoff and Goethe. She then tries to separate from the pious vision of the world which his/her mother has. She learns how to know a young revolutionary writer of spirit, Heinrich Leuthold. She will spend many summers in the area of Coire and in particular with Jenins and Maienfeld, which became the places where the history of Heidi proceeds.

In 1852, it marries Johann Bernhard Spyri, lawyer then chancellor of the town of Zurich. They have an only son Bernhard. Husband and sons die both in 1884. After their death, it is devoted to the writing and charitable works. She dies in 1901, and is buried with the Cimetière of Sihlfeld, in Zurich.

From 1871 until its death, it publishes 31 pounds, 27 pounds of stories and 4 booklets, of which:
