Johann Rosenmüller

Johann Rosenmüller (* 1619September 12th 1684 á Wolfenbüttel) is a German Compositeur .

He probably made his musical studies near the German type-setter Michael Tobias (1592-1657), which he met with Leipzig in 1640.

He taught then during ten years at the Saint-Thomas school of this city, before being named Organiste with the Saint Nicolas's Day church. In 1653, the municipal council of Leipzig promised to him the succession at the station of cantor of Saint-Thomas, but its career was brutally completed in spring 1655 when he saw himself stopping and imprisoning as several small singers with whom it was suspected of having had sexual relationships.

It succeeds in escaping from prison and gaining Hamburg, before being established as musician and type-setter with Venice in 1658. Of 1678 with 1682, he was type-setter with the Old people's home of Pietà, celebrates it orphanage for young girls, where Antonio Vivaldi will be Maître in Concerts during first half of the 18th century.

In 1674, Rosenmüller returned in Germany as a choirmaster of the court of prince de Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. It went back to Italy in 1682 at the time of a voyage to Venice of the duke Anton Ulrich von Wolfenbüttel.

One owes in Rosenmüller several hundreds of vocal works, or instrumental, very influenced by the Italian music, in particular by that of a Giovanni Legrenzi (1626 - 1690) or of a Corelli. Its vocal works are mainly of crowned inspiration , and indicate the influence of Heinrich Schütz. The inventories of the collections of manuscripts of the time testify to the popularity of which he enjoyed alive sound.

Beside many parts of church, Rosenmüller composed continuations and sonatas, contributing significantly to the development and the evolution of these two forms.

  • Weihnachtshistorie (History of the Nativity)
  • Lamentationes Jeremiae (Lamentations of Jérémie)

It is during years 1980 that the great quality of its compositions was redécouverte.
