In Ichtyologie, its principal contribution is the republication of the book Peter Artedi (1705-1735) which presents all the species known at the time increased by a bibliography updated at Walbaum.

This book will very severely be criticized by Georges Cuvier (1769-1832). Its work is revalued by Theodore Nicholas Gill (1837-1914) which recognizes its interest in particular for its descriptions of various kinds described by others.
