Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider is a philologist and a German Naturaliste , born the January 18th 1750 with Kollmen (today Collm) close to Oschatz in the east of Leipzig and dead the January 12th 1822 with Breslau.

He studies philology, in particular the classic authors Greek, and the Natural history at the university of Leipzig, then with that Göttingen and finally with that of Strasbourg where he obtains his title of doctor in 1774.

On the recommendations of Christian Gottlob Heyne (1729-1812), he becomes the secretary of Richard François Philippe Brunck (1729-1803), large specialist in the ancient literature.

In 1776, he becomes professor of philology at the university of Frankfurt-on-the Oder. He is the author of many translations or comments of ancient works, in particular of Aristote and Nicandre de Colophon and is regarded as one of the best specialists in the philology of his time.

He loses his station when its university is transferred in 1811 to Breslau (today Wroc∏aw in Poland) and accepts the post of librarian then.

Among its important work, it is necessary to quote Kritisches griechisch-deutsches Handwörterbuch (1797-1798), the first lexicon of the kind since the Thesaurus of Stephanus. It will be the starting point of work of Franz Passow (1786-1833) and of all the lexicons which will follow. Schneider largely improves comprehension of the words or the expressions scientific and raising in particular of the natural history.

It publishes editions of Of will natura animalium of Élien; Alexipharmaca and Theriaca of Nicandre; Scriptores rei rusticae ; Historia animalium and Politica of Aristote; Physica and Meteorologica of Épicure; Eclogae physicae of Théophraste; Halieutica of Oppien de Corycos and Cynegetica of Oppien of Syria; complete works of Xénophon and Vitruve; the Argonautica of the pseudo Orphée; a test on the life and a collection of the texts of Pindare.

It also publishes Eclogae physicae a compilation of Greek and Latin texts on scientific subjects, as well as a test on science and the natural history in Antiquity.

Even if the natural history does not occupy the first place in its life, he is the author of several important work. Its knowledge of the dead languages enables him to propose binomial names correct. Its work is marked by its specialization. Thus, one of its herpetologic works , Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Schilkröten (1783, which it supplements in 1787 and 1789), is before a a whole historical analysis of knowledge on the tortoise S but it describes also some species S communes.

In 1790 - 1792, it publishes Amphibiorum Physiologiae devoted to the Taxinomie of the Lézard S. In 1799 and 1801, it publishes Historiae Amphibiorum , is a world review of the Amphibien S and Reptile S where it describes many kinds and new species.

In 1801, it improves and increases the Systema Ichthyologiae iconibus ex illustratum of Marcus Elieser Bloch, famous for his splendid illustrations. It publishes in 1812 a report on the Gecko S and in 1821 on the boa S.
