Johann Georg Albrechtsberger

Johann Georg Albrechtsberger (* February 3rd 1736, Klosterneuburg - † March 7th 1809, Vienna) is a Musicien and a Compositeur Autrichien.

Biography

Organist with the imperial court and Choirmaster of the Saint-Etienne Cathedral of Vienna, he was the friend of Haydn and Mozart, and the Master of Beethoven. It composed much of sacred music - 26 Messe S, Oratorio S, Motet S, and a very beautiful Te Deum - as well as Prélude S and Fugue S for Orgue S, of the Chamber music and the theoretical works.

Its most important contribution to the music probably holds in its theoretical writings. In 1790, it published in Leipzig a treaty of composition whose third edition appeared in 1821. A compilation of its writings on the harmony in three volumes was published by the care of its pupil Ignaz von Seyfried (1776-1841) in 1826. It of it was drawn a translation in English by Novello in 1855. Its style of composition is inspired by the counterpoint as described in its Gradus AD Parnassum by Johann Joseph Fux, one of its distances predecessors as a choirmaster of the cathedral Saint Stephan in Vienna.
