Johann Friedrich Naumann

Johann Friedrich Naumann is a German ornithologist , born the February 14th 1780 in Ziebigk Cöthen and dead the August 15th 1857 in this same village.

He is the son of the farmer and ornithologist Johann Andreas Naumann (1744-1826). He shows as of his young age a great talent for the drawing. He must leave the school at 14 years to help his father in the family exploitation.

He starts to make appear in 1820 a very important work of ornithology that it cosigne with his/her father: J. - has. Naumann' S Naturgeschichte der Vögel Deutschlands; herausgegeben von dessen Sohne J. - F. Naumann , although he is very clearly the principal author. He carries out in particular 400 engravings which illustrate these twelve volumes whose publication lasts twenty-four years. He supplements it in 1847 by an additional volume. This immense unit will be republished of 1901 with 1904 under the title of Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mittel-Europa (Managed, twelve volumes) by Carl R. Hennicke (1865-1941).

In 1821, the prince Ferdinand Friedrich (1769-1830) buys to him its collection of birds naturalized for 2  000 thalers. It names it also directing of sound Cabinet of curiosities. It takes part, in 1850, with the creation of the Deutsche Ornithologen-Gesellschaft.

The family farm was transformed into museum.
