Johann Benedict Listing
Johann Benedict Listing (July 25th 1808 with Frankfurt - December 24th 1882 with Göttingen) is a German mathematician.
He enters in 1830 to the Université of Göttingen, where he is the pupil of Gauss. In 1834 it supports its thesis entitled Of superficiebus secundi ordinis . It is the first to be used the word Topologie, instead of the usual term geometria situs , wanting to thus mark the increasing autonomy of this discipline.
He teaches mathematics with Hanover as from 1837, then sees himself allotting in 1839 a pulpit of physics. In 1847 it publishes Vorstudien zur Topologie . In 1858 discovers the topological properties of surface now known under the name of Ruban of Möbius, independently of this last. In 1862 in penny works Der Census raumlicher Complexe oder Verallgemeinerung of Euler' schen Satzes von den Polyedern it generalizes the Caractéristique of Euler of the Polyèdre S with the complex simpliciaux.
Listing was also interested in the Géodésie and one owes him the term of Geoid.
